Wordsw Collision-induced absorption is of great importance to the overall radiative budget in dense CO2-rich atmospheres, but its representation in climate models remains uncertain, mainly due to a lack of accurate experimental and theoretical data. Here we compare several parameterisations of the effect, including a new one that makes use of previously unused measurements in the 1200–1800 cm 1 spectral range. We find that a widely used parameterisation strongly overestimates absorption in pure CO2 atmospheres compared to later results, and propose a new approach that we believe is the most accurate possible given currently available data. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Radiative transfer in CO2-rich paleoatmospheres
[1] Calculations of radiative transfer in CO2-rich atmospheres are central to modeling the early climate of Earth and Mars. Line-by-line radiative transfer models are the most accurate means of carrying out such calculations and provide the basis for all other radiative transfer approaches. We examine the sensitivity of line-by-line results to three parameterizations of line and continuum absor...
متن کاملHalf-widths, their temperature dependence, and line shifts for the HDO–CO2 collision system for applications to CO2-rich planetary atmospheres
Measurements of water vapor in the atmospheres of Venus or Mars by spectroscopic techniques in the infrared range are being made routinely by instruments onboard the Venus Express and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The interpretation of these measurements in the 2250–4450 cm 1 region is being complicated by the presence of HDO lines absorbing radiation in this region. These spectra cannot be ...
متن کاملAtomic and Molecular Opacities for Brown Dwarf and Giant Planet Atmospheres
We present a comprehensive description of the theory and practice of opacity calculations from the infrared to the ultraviolet needed to generate models of the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Methods for using existing line lists and spectroscopic databases in disparate formats are presented and plots of the resulting absorptive opacities versus wavelength for the most...
متن کاملTransient reducing greenhouse warming on early Mars
The evidence for abundant liquid water on early Mars despite 3 the faint young Sun is a long-standing problem in planetary research. Here 4 we present new ab initio spectroscopic and line-by-line climate calculations 5 of the warming potential of reduced atmospheres on early Mars. We show 6 that the strength of both CO2-H2 and CO2-CH4 collision-induced absorp7 tion (CIA) has previously been sig...
متن کاملRadiative Transfer in the Early Atmospheres of Mars and Earth
Introduction: The early climates of Earth and Mars appear to have been relatively warm, despite the existence of a less luminous young Sun [1]. Most attempts at reconciling these apparently contradicting observations rely on atmospheres that are richer in greenhouse gases (GHGs) than the present atmospheres of either planet [2]. The major contribution to most plausible greenhouses is from CO2 a...
